October is the month when nature shifts to warm colors – and it has not just one, but two birthstones: opal and tourmaline. Two gemstones, each with their own very special play of color, that I love designing with.
Opal & tourmaline – October’s birthstones
The opal has always been surrounded by magic. The name originates from the Sanskrit upala, which means "gemstone," and the stone is known for its vibrant play of color. Opal has been seen as a symbol of hope, creativity, and inspiration. In my jewelry, I use both the soft, rose pink opal and the warm, orange fire opal, which glows like burning autumn leaves.
Tourmaline is almost the gemstone of the rainbow. It is found in more colors than almost any other gemstone, and the name comes from the Sinhalese turmali, which means "stone with mixed colors." Tourmaline is associated with balance and protection.
Are you born in October – or do you know someone who is – you can find all the year's birthstones on my page about birthstones.
Here are five of my favorite designs featuring October's gemstones.
RIVIERE GREY – unique design with tourmaline and pearls
RIVIERE GREY is one of my unique designs – there is only one. The earrings combine tourmaline and freshwater pearls in sterling silver, so the gemstone's colors meet the pearls' soft luster. Each unique design comes with a personal greeting from me.
How to style them: Let them be the only jewelry piece with a simple knit or a white shirt – then they are allowed to tell the whole story.

CROWN Big Round – pink opal around your neck
In CROWN Big Round, a beautiful pink opal sits surrounded by 24kt gold-plated sterling silver. The CROWN collection celebrates JEWLSCPH's 20th anniversary – 20 years of passion for jewelry and gemstones.
How to style it: Choose the short length for a round neckline, or the long one over a black turtleneck. The necklace is available in 44, 54, 67, and 79 cm.

CROWN Enchanted – pink opal and sparkling topazes
My CROWN Enchanted earrings are drop-shaped with a faceted pink opal surrounded by small white topazes in 24kt gold-plated sterling silver. The white gemstones make the rose opal stand out even more.

My best tips for styling opal and tourmaline
- Gold makes the colors warm: 24kt gold-plated silver makes both pink and fire opal glow.
- Autumn colors: Fire opal is beautiful with camel, rust, brown, and cream.
- Pink opal loves softness: Combine with gray, white, and powder shades for a feminine look.
- Take good care of your opal: Opal contains water and is sensitive to heat and chemicals – take it off before using perfume or cream. Read more tips in my post on how to care for your jewelry.
