About Diamonds
We all know diamonds. But what is a diamond?
Specifically, a diamond is a transparent mineral composed of carbon – and the hardest mineral we know.
However, a diamond is not "just" a diamond, and the value of each individual diamond is determined by the 4 C's: carat, clarity, colour, and cut. We cannot change the first three C's, but we can indeed change the last C (cut), and the goal of the cut is to achieve the best reflection of light in the diamond.

Popular Cuts
The most well-known diamond cut is the brilliant cut, which dominates approximately 90% of today's diamond market. A brilliant (most often) has 57 facets (cuts), and these facets beautifully reflect light. The first brilliant-cut diamonds appeared in the 17th century. However, the modern brilliant cut was first calculated in London in 1919.
Another very popular cut is single-cut diamonds, which, like a brilliant, are shaped like an "inverted iceberg" with a top (upper part) and a pointed base (lower part). But while a brilliant most often has 57 facets, the single-cut diamond is a rougher cut – also known as an 8/8 octagonal cut – with eight facets + a table facet on the upper part and eight facets on the pointed base. Single-cut diamonds are also cheaper than brilliants due to fewer cuts.
But there are a host of different diamond cuts – and they all have one thing in common: they captivate, sparkle, and seduce…..
