I have designed jewelry for 21 years, and throughout all that time, one thing has remained absolutely certain to me: My diamonds must be created by the earth. Not by a machine.

To me, a diamond is a promise. It must contain something that lasts – something rare that no one can replicate. That is why all diamonds in my designs are natural. Without exception.

Right now, more and more lab-grown diamonds are being sold. I understand that the low price can be tempting. But I would like to tell you why I have chosen differently – and what you should look for when choosing a diamond piece of jewelry.

Born under unimaginable pressure

Imagine a place about 150 to 200 kilometers beneath your feet. Here, the heat is over 1,000 degrees, and the pressure is so intense that pure carbon is squeezed together and crystallizes. This is how a diamond is formed.

The result is the hardest material nature has produced – 10 on the Mohs scale. Only much later did volcanic forces push the diamonds toward the surface, where they are found today in the volcanic rock kimberlite.

This is where the diamond's second life begins: It is found, sorted, and cut by skilled artisans – and finally ends up in my workshop, where it finds its place in a design.

Older than life on land

Most natural diamonds are between 1 and 3.5 billion years old. That means they came into being long before the first plants grew on land, and long before any human walked the earth.

I never tire of that thought. When you pass a ring on to your daughter or grandchild, you are giving her a gemstone that has waited inside the earth for a billion years. No factory can tell that story.

Nature or factory – how they differ

A lab-grown diamond is manufactured industrially. Either carbon is pressed together under artificially high pressure and heat (HPHT), or it is built up layer by layer from carbon gas in a vacuum chamber (CVD). This typically takes a few weeks.

On paper, the material is the same, and even an experienced eye cannot tell the difference without instruments. But on the points that matter most to me, there is a world of difference:

Natural diamond Lab-grown diamond
Who created it? The earth A machine
How long did it take? It is typically 1–3.5 billion years old A few weeks
How many exist? A limited amount As many as the factories will produce
Does it have a story? Every single one is shaped by nature Mass-produced from a recipe
How has the price developed? More stable over time Plummeted year after year
Can it be resold? There is an established market Many jewelers do not buy them at all

My no to lab-grown

I will be completely honest: I am opposed to lab-grown diamonds in fine jewelry. They sparkle – no one can take that away from them. But they lack everything that makes a diamond something special.

The rarity disappears. A diamond has always been a symbol because it is rare. When a factory can produce them without limit, there is no longer anything rare to celebrate.

The value disappears. Diamond analyst Paul Zimnisky has calculated that the prices of lab-grown diamonds fell by around 85 percent from 2015 to 2025. What you pay today will probably be worth far less in a few years.

The story disappears. A natural diamond is a piece of the earth's past. A lab-grown diamond is a product from a production line. To me, that is the difference between an original work of art and a print.

The legacy disappears. My jewelry is created to be worn, loved, and passed on. That requires gemstones that retain their meaning from generation to generation.

That is why I can give you a simple promise: At JEWLSCPH, you will only get natural diamonds. Always.

The eye cannot tell the difference

Precisely because lab-grown and natural diamonds look the same to the eye, trust is everything. You must be able to trust the person you buy from – and you must have it in writing.

Forget the good advice on the internet about breathing on the diamond or dipping it in a glass of water. Only a gemological laboratory with special equipment can determine where a diamond comes from. That is why a certificate always accompanies my diamond jewelry.

Carat, color, clarity, and cut

The diamond world talks about "the 4 Cs". This is how I explain them when I am with a customer in my showroom:

  • Carat tells you how much the diamonds weigh. One carat is equal to 0.2 grams.
  • Color is the color. The more colorless, the closer to D in the alphabet. G and H are almost colorless, while designations such as LM give a warmer, slightly champagne-colored tone.
  • Clarity is the clarity. VS means "very slightly included" – very small natural traces that you cannot see without a loupe.
  • Cut is the cut – and in my opinion, it is the most important. It is the cut that brings the diamond to life.

My experience is that many people fixate on the size. But a small diamond with a beautiful cut can easily steal the attention from a larger one that has been poorly cut.

Brilliant cut – when the diamond needs to sparkle

The brilliant is the classic, round diamond with 57 or 58 facets. The facets are calculated so that the light is reflected back up through the top, and that gives the intense flash you see when the hand moves.

I use brilliant-cut diamonds in my designs in 18-karat gold. When it says "0.20 carat, brilliant cut, color G, clarity VS" on one of my pieces of jewelry, it means: diamonds weighing a total of 0.20 carat, almost colorless, and with inclusions so small that you cannot see them.

Single-cut – the diamond's soft glow

Single-cut is an older and simpler cut with fewer facets – typically 17 or 18. It does not sparkle in the same way as a brilliant. In return, it gets a soft, warm glow that reminds of starlight.

I love single-cut diamonds because they give my designs a vintage feel and a raw elegance. They pair perfectly with black oxidized sterling silver and 24-karat gold plating, where the contrast makes every small diamond stand out sharply. My single-cut diamonds are color LM and clarity VS2 – a warm tone that harmonizes beautifully with the gold.

And yes: My single-cut diamonds are also natural.

The earth's fingerprint

Look at a natural diamond under a loupe, and you will almost always find small inclusions – tiny crystals or structures that were trapped while the diamond grew deep in the earth.

I see them as the earth's signature. They prove that your diamond was created by nature, and that there is no other one exactly like it.

Diamonds in all the colors of nature

Nature does not stop at colorless. Natural diamonds are also found in golden, cognac, pink, blue, green, and black shades. The most intense colors are among the most sought-after gemstones that exist.

A piece of jewelry is not a stock

I will never promise you that a piece of jewelry will increase in value. It depends on far too many things – the quality, the design, the documentation, and the market.

But I can promise you that a natural diamond is a limited resource that no one can produce more of. A lab-grown diamond, on the other hand, can be made again and again. That is why a natural diamond is the only choice I can stand behind.

Buy your piece of jewelry because you love it and want to wear it every day for many years. Then you have made the right choice.

Certificate with every diamond piece of jewelry

With my diamond jewelry comes a certificate that describes the design, the materials, and the diamonds – and confirms that the diamonds are natural.

Questions I often get

Are all your diamonds natural?

Yes. Every single diamond in my designs is natural – both brilliant-cut and single-cut diamonds.

Why does a natural diamond cost more than a lab-grown one?

Because the earth has only created a limited amount. Lab-grown diamonds can be produced without limits, and their prices have plummeted in recent years.

Can I tell if a diamond is natural myself?

No, that requires a gemological laboratory. That is why a certificate is included with my diamond jewelry.

What is the difference between a brilliant and a single-cut diamond?

A brilliant has 57–58 facets and an intense, sparkling flash. A single-cut has fewer facets and a softer, warmer glow with a vintage feel.

Should I take care of my diamond?

Yes. Diamond is nature's hardest material, but an unfortunate impact against an edge can still damage it. Take your rings off when you exercise or work with your hands, so they can be passed down for many generations.

Are natural diamonds only colorless?

No. Nature has created them in everything from golden and cognac to pink, blue, green, and black.

Experience them in my showroom

A diamond must be experienced in the light – on your own hand, around your own neck. You are always welcome to book a private visit to my showroom, where I will show you my jewelry with natural diamonds and tell the story behind each design.

Warm regards
