Diamonds are known to us all. But what exactly is a diamond?
Specifically, a diamond is a transparent mineral consisting of carbon – and the hardest mineral known to us.
However, a diamond is not just "a diamond," and the value of each diamond is determined by the 4 Cs: carat, clarity, color, and cut. The first three Cs cannot be altered by humans, but the last C (cut) can indeed be altered, and the aim of the cut is to achieve the best reflection of light within the diamond.

Popular Diamond Cuts
The most well-known cut of a diamond is the "brilliant cut", which dominates approximately 90% of today's diamond market. A brilliant cut diamond typically has 57 facets (cuts), which beautifully reflect light. The first brilliant-cut diamonds were seen in the 17th century. However, the modern brilliant cut was not devised until 1919 in London.
Another highly popular cut is the single-cut diamonds, which, like a brilliant, have a shape resembling an "inverted iceberg" with a top (crown) and a pointed bottom (pavilion). However, while a brilliant typically has 57 facets, the single-cut diamond is a more raw cut – also known as an 8/8 octagon cut – with eight facets plus a table facet on the crown and eight facets on the pointed bottom. Single-cut diamonds are cheaper than brilliants due to their fewer facets.
But there is a plethora of different diamond cuts – and they all share the same allure, sparkle, and allure...
